With DDPY I just throw down my mat, fire up the app, and get at it. I suppose I’m missing out on the social aspect of interacting with the other people in the studio, but whatever. It’s more time, I have to park, I have to get changed there, and I have to shower there. The last thing I want to do is add in a drive to the yoga studio. I’m already driving to jiu jitsu and Muay Thai. I’ve found that doing intense weightlifting is almost incompatible with my martial arts training because it takes too much out of me.Īnother obvious benefit of it, but probably the biggest one for me, is that you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

That’s good because I want to put my energy into BJJ and Muay Thai. Doing DDPY actually gives me energy, instead of leaving me exhausted. So it’s hard, but it’s not physically taxing on your whole body and nervous system the way heavy weightlifting is. I found myself drenched in sweat and swearing after my first time doing Fat Burner, and for many more of them after. The sessions are kind of difficult in the sense that you’re always flexing everything. For the beginner portion (13 weeks) you’re doing about three sessions a week, from 15-40 minutes each. One thing that I love about DDPY is that it doesn’t take too much time and energy out of me. I can almost bend down and put my palm on the floor. I can lean forward and extend my hands easily over my toes. And I’ve just gotten way more flexible in general, which is probably the main reason why we do yoga to begin with. DDP’s emphasis on flexing the glutes is also helping me to correct my anterior pelvic tilt. I can squat deeper and my knees don’t come into the middle as much (watch how GSP lands after he does a backflip and you’ll see what I’m talking about). For a while now I’ve had a weird feeling in my right knee which seems to be going away also. My knees are also feeling way more mobile. I think that the “Diamond Cutter” move is great for that. I’m beginning to get more mobility in my shoulders, which have always been very tight and rolled forward. I got into DDP yoga four months ago and I love it. For a home yoga practice, I’m a big fan of DDPY.

And having structural integrity, good balance and body control, a strong mind-muscle connection, and proper breathing practice are all very helpful as well, both on the mat and off of it. It can help your kicks for Muay Thai and it can add a lot of options into your BJJ game that someone with limited flexibility will not have. I believe that yoga is beneficial for jiu jitsu and Muay Thai for several reasons.
